Candidate Name: Lindsey Boylan

Office Campaigning for: Manhattan Borough President

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR POSITION ON THE ROLE OF PUBLIC GREEN SPACES WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES.

We must expand the amount of green space in New York City. Open, public green space is vital to a thriving community, particularly for low-income communities. I will never recommend a rezoning plan that does not increase, overall, the amount of green space in the City.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR POSITION ON HOW THE CITY PRIORITIZES PUBLIC OPEN GREEN SPACE AND HOW COMMUNITY GARDENS ARE OFTEN PITTED AGAINST THE NEED FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

We can increase the supply of affordable housing in this City without decreasing the amount of green space, and we must. There are many zoning and rules changes that can be made that would allow for the provision of more affordable housing without reducing the amount of green space owned by the City.

HAVE YOU EVER VISITED ELIZABETH STREET GARDEN? IF SO, PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE.

I have. The Garden is an amazing oasis in a sea of noise and chaos. Of course, I love that chaos, and wouldn’t live anywhere else, but when I need to reset I turn to green spaces like those at Elizabeth Street.

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION ON THE ALTERNATIVE SITE SOLUTION THAT WOULD USE 388 HUDSON — A GRAVEL- FILLED, CITY-OWNED LOT — TO PROVIDE UP TO 5X THE AMOUNT OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND ADDITIONAL PUBLIC OPEN SPACE WHILE SAVING ELIZABETH STREET GARDEN?

We absolutely should use 388 Hudson to develop more affordable housing. We desperately need more affordable housing, and in my proposed housing plan, we call for tens of thousands of additional affordable housing units in the City, but we do not need to reduce the amount of greenspace to do so.

ESG CURRENTLY HAS A PENDING LAWSUIT TO SAVE THE GARDEN LED BY ATTORNEY NORMAN SIEGEL. IF THE ISSUE IS NOT RESOLVED BEFORE THE CHANGE IN ADMINISTRATION, ONCE IN OFFICE, HOW WOULD YOU WORK WITH ESG TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE ELIZABETH STREET GARDEN?

As Borough President, I will consult with ESG to recommend a plan for more affordable housing that protects and preserves Elizabeth Street Garden. I will work with the City Council, the Mayor, and Community Board to develop the 388 Hudson lot in its stead and create more affordable housing for seniors so that we can fulfill a mission of expanding affordable housing and expanding green space in New York.
